Forging New Oncofertility Relationships in Los Angeles

Earlier this year, the California Cryobank (CCB) hosted an inaugural Oncofertility Reception to connect medical providers in the Los Angeles community who treat young adults with cancer. Representatives from University of California at Los Angeles, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Tao of Medicine, Southern California Reproductive Center, HRC Fertility, Pacific Fertility Center, and more gathered at the CCB headquarters in West Los Angeles for a lively discussion about Oncofertility, catered tapas by Bite Catering Couture, LLC, a tour of the state of the art Cryogenics facilities and an inspiring keynote speech by two-time lymphoma survivor Ethan Zohn.

Currently the American Society of Clinical Oncology reports that oncologists only discuss fertility risks with their young adult patients 50% of the time. CCB’s Fertile Future goal is to ensure 100% of physicians discuss this risk to their newly diagnosed patients in time for fertility preservation treatments to take place.  President of CCB Reproductive department, Pamela Richardson, said, “I was really impressed with the ideas that came out of the discussion. I think we can improve patient care in Los Angeles by having these types of dialogue routinely.”

CCB and those who participated in the evening are investing in this greater good by sponsoring educational events, reaching out to oncologists directly and hosting receptions such as this one to foster collaboration. We know we’ve done our job when every young adult touched by cancer has the opportunity to preserve their fertility prior to cancer treatment.
